Urmia University of Medical Sciences, founded by Dr. Joseph Kakran in 1878 AD, holds the distinction of being the oldest modern medical school in Iran. It embarked on its journey with the enrollment of 27 students, and today, its legacy spans over a century.

In the realm of nursing education, the first nursing school in the country was established in Urmia in 1294, initiating student admissions. This institution continued its mission as a Nursing School until 1355, and from 1360 onwards, it evolved into the Nursing and Health Education Complex, admitting students. Finally, in 1366, it found its place as the School of Nursing and Midwifery within the framework of Urmia University of Medical Sciences.

Presently, Urmia University of Medical Sciences, with its six faculties, caters to 4,524 students, boasts a dedicated faculty of 374 professors, and hosts over 300 international students. This esteemed institution also takes pride in being the publisher of two specialized journals.
